The Harold Brown Villa

The Harold Brown Villa, after having remained in the same family since 1895, is now on the market. One of Newport’s famous Gilded Age mansions, the property is set to sell for $4.995 million.

The 13,962 square foot mansion sits on 4.85 acres of land on prestigious Bellevue Avenue. It was originally built in 1895 for Harold Brown, a member of the Providence Brown family (of Brown University). Landscaping was done by the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted, which is known for designing Manhattan’s Central Park.

The doors of the 25 room French-inspired house open into a grand entrance hall with a marble floor and columns.

The ground floor was built for entertaining. Eileen Slocum, having inherited the mansion from her aunt, Harold Brown’s wife Georgette Sherman Brown, hosted former presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush along with other political figures like Dick Cheney and Elizabeth Dole in the home.

A porch overlooks the grounds, which include winding gravel paths and massive trees. A covered terrace provides a cozy spot for outdoor entertaining on the other side of the house.

Kurt Cobain’s Daughter Frances Bean Cobain Lists Vintage Hollywood Home

Frances Bean Cobain, the only child of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and Hole’s Courtney Love, has just listed her Hollywood home for $2.7 million. She bought the property back in 2011, while she was still a teenager. Cobain, now 25, put her keen eye for design and style to work on this home, contributing to the nearly $90,000 increase in the home’s value since her original purchase.

“She has a sense for what makes this home really special—what makes the house really sing,” says the broker working with Cobain. “That, of course, is the remarkable period detail.”

She kept many details of the 1930 Spanish Colonial intact, including hand-painted Spanish tiles, original hardware, wrought-iron railings, leaded-glass windows, hardwood flooring, and stenciled beams. She did, however, seamlessly update the home’s older features, swapping in high-end Viking appliances, a farmhouse sink, and walk-in pantry, as well as open shelving and subway tile backsplash.

Cobain’s 4 bed, 3.5 bath home covers 3,357 square feet, with an additional 9,784 square feet of outdoor living space.

The upstairs master bedroom is fitted with a dressing area, ample closet space, a balcony, and an en suite bathroom with beautifully preserved original turquoise tile. Cobain also converted the detached garage into a combination recording studio and screening room.

Her private tile patio with dining and lounging areas are surrounded by towering hedges, and there is ample room for an in-ground pool on the expansive grounds.

Located near the popular Runyon Canyon hiking trail and Wattles Garden Park, and is only a quick drive away from Sunset Boulevard and Beverly Hills.
