NBA Legend Wilt Chamberlain Asks $19M for Bel Air Home

Wilt Chamberlain’s custom-built house in Los Angeles’s famous Bel Air hills is now on the market. The asking price for the contemporary home is $19 million.

Apart from being the site of legendary gatherings of Olympic athletes and socialites alike, the home is also valuable of its own accord. An architectural gem showcasing the end of the late period of modern design, the Bel Air home is art in itself, the best example of which may be the home’s front entrance gate, which features pilasters inlaid with triangular pieces of colored glass; evocative of the period’s emphasis on individual expression.

The 7,158 square-foot house, built in 1971, sits on nearly 2.6 acres of land, and contains 6 bedrooms and 6 baths. Inside, more ornamental cut glass, stone, timber and steel add to the unique beauty of this home. Lovely walkways and water features blur the border of interior and exterior, and combine with the vaulted buttressed ceilings to create a natural, “one with the earth” feeling, by way of Japanese home design.
