John Mellencamp Lists Santa Barbara Mountaintop Retreat

Last month, acclaimed rocker John Mellencamp put his Santa Barbara retreat up for sale. Mellencamp purchased the 1,800 square foot Mediterranean estate and had it renovated. Trevor Goff, a Los Angeles designer, was in charge of the project. The modest three-bedroom, two-bathroom home features breathtaking views of the ocean.

The withdrawn mountaintop retreat, built in 1980, occupies six acres with views that sweep over the Pacific. The white brick, rustic, and genuine adobe residence is located on a sky-high ridge at the end of a gated, olive tree-lined path.

Inside, there are exposed adobe walls, vaulted wood-beamed ceilings, polished floor tiles, and huge picture windows that capture tantalizing mountain, coastline, and ocean views. There’s a black-and-yellow vintage motorcycle parked in front of a big window in the main room. It includes a living room warmed by a simple fireplace and an open kitchen that showcases up-to-date appliances and a stained-glass window. The timeless-rustic primary bedroom features a cozy sitting area dominated by a rounded raised-hearth adobe fireplace and access to a covered, Saltillo tile-floored porch that looks out over the scenery. It also includes a large view deck with a hot tub.

About four miles from the ocean, up a winding canyon road, the unusually private property includes a horse stall, riding trails, and a shed Mellencamp converted to an artist’s studio.

Mellencamp, a top-selling musician that belongs to the Rock and Roll Hall of fame since 25 years ago, is a dedicated and accomplished painter. Several of his artworks are hanging throughout the house.
